21 Tips on Fasting:

  1. Know your why — decide the specific reason or season for this fast.

  2. Pray first — enter the fast believing God will speak and act.

  3. Fast with humility — include repentance and sorrow over sin.

  4. Start each morning with prayer and Scripture — give God uninterrupted time.

  5. Read Scripture aloud and let it “leap off the page.”

  6. Set aside at least 30 minutes of focused reading/prayer each morning.

  7. Write down impressions, revelations, or things the Lord brings to mind.

  8. Expect physical reactions early on (dizziness, headache, nausea) and don’t panic.

  9. Let fasting become a time of listening more than talking — give God room to speak.

  10. Use fasting as a time to draw nearer in worship — sing, praise, and adore Him freely.

  11. Make fasting a time of intercession for others — family, community, church, and nation.

  12. Stay hydrated — drink room-temperature water throughout the day.

  13. Use fasting to shift attention from material needs to God’s heart and holiness.

  14. Let fasting loosen your dependence on earthly comforts and align your heart to God’s purposes.

  15. Use seasons of fasting to discover God’s plan.

  16. Fast for spiritual breakthrough: habitual sin patterns, addictions, or spiritual oppression.

  17. Expect personal change — God often alters thinking and priorities during a fast.

  18. Anticipate a deeper prayer life and restoration of “first love” for the Lord.

  19. Be prepared to share repentance, ask forgiveness, and reconcile broken relationships.

  20. Include corporate/communal fasting when seeking church or national direction (Joel, Acts examples).

  21. Finish by thanking God — gratitude deepens and cements what you’ve learned or received.
